School history

Gravenhurst Public School (GPS) has a long history that dates back to the incorporation of the town in the 1880s.

The first school, Central Public School (CPS), opened in 1883 on lands behind the Opera House (where the current Gravenhurst Public Library is located). The first CPS burned in 1887.

A new six room framed school house was built on the current grounds where both elementary and secondary schools have existed in various forms since 1888. The new CPS burned down in 1923 and was quickly replaced with a brick elementary school in 1924.

The new CPS was added to several times and, by 1960, the original school school structure was obsolete and demolished. The last school named CPS stood on the rocky grounds in front of the current GPS.

Our values

At GPS, we believe in the Grizzly GROWL. The GROWL defines who we are as a school, what we value in each other, and how we go about managing situations when things go wrong. The GROWL is celebrated through weekly school gatherings where we reflect on our successes and growth and honour student success by awarding “Grizz Sticks”.
