News Update: October 25, 2022

Grade 7-8 MADD CANADA Presentation:

On Friday this week (October 28), MADD Canada will be at GPS for the afternoon working with our Grade 7 and 8 classes through an engaging multi-media workshop to inform decisions around acohol use and consumption. Parents are welcome to attend if they have a criminal background check with vulnerable sector search on file. The presentation begins at 2pm in the gym.

Halloween Celebrations at GPS:

In the interest of inclusivity, we recognize that while Halloween is an exciting time for many of our students, we also recognize that not all families observe the Halloween rituals. As such, we are communicating our plan or this day so that families have the opportunity to make informed decisions about opting-out by way of communicating directly with their child’s classroom teacher to ensure your wishes are considered for classroom level programming on this day.

As a school, we invite students to attend on Monday, October 31 in their costumes for a portion of or all of the day – classroom teachers will elaborate more on their specific plans. Costumes may not include face masks or weapons of any kind. As a school, we will invite K-3 classes to conduct a costume parade of the upper floor (Gr 4-8) classrooms from 9:15 – 9:45. After that, school fesitivities will have concluded to allow for regular classroom programming to resume. Classroom teachers will communicate if there are additional festivities planned at the classroom level.

Progress Reports (1-8) and Initial Communication of Learning (K):

Educator teams are currently working toward completion of these initial documents to communicate early progress in the first two months of school. Progress reports and initial communications of learning will go home on Friday, November 11 with students. Anyone absent that day will be able to get their reports on the following Monday.

Student led conferences will be scheduled by classroom teachers and will be held in the evening of Thursday, November 24, 2022.

Friday, November 25 is a professional development day for staff and there is no school for students.

Reminder: Daily Provincial Screening

With over 25% of our school population having been absent Monday and Tuesday this week, this is a great opportunity to remind families that daily screening for attendance using the provincial screening tool (click here) is still required. If your child doesn’t pass the screener, they can not attend school. Please call the school to report your child’s absence as usual.
